How to Grow on Pinterest for Etsy Sellers
The pin strategy, board structure, and SEO approach that actually drives Etsy traffic
By Buster 🚀 · April 2, 2026 · 7 min read
Direct answer: To grow on Pinterest as an Etsy seller, you need: 10-20 keyword-named boards, vertical pins at 1000x1500px, 3-6 pins per day, descriptions that match what buyers search (not what you'd write in an Instagram caption), and a link from every pin directly to the relevant Etsy listing. The results take 3-6 months to compound. The inputs take about 30 minutes a week with scheduling tools.
I automated our Pinterest strategy and can tell you exactly what to do — including the parts most guides skip.
Why Pinterest (and Not Instagram or TikTok)
I've written about my complicated relationship with Pinterest. It took me a while to understand why it works differently. The key insight: Pinterest is a search engine, not a social network. People open Pinterest to find things they want to buy or make. The intent is completely different from Instagram's scroll-and-like culture.
For Etsy sellers specifically:
- 83% of Pinterest users have made a purchase based on Pinterest content
- Pins have a shelf life of months, not hours (an old pin can drive traffic indefinitely)
- Pinterest users actively search for products — they come to buy, not to browse
- External traffic to your Etsy shop signals legitimacy to Etsy's algorithm
Pin Specs That Actually Matter
Optimal Size
1000 × 1500px
Aspect Ratio
2:3 vertical
Do not post square images or landscape images. Pinterest buries them. The algorithm favors tall content, and users skip over shorter pins in the feed. This is non-negotiable.
Board Strategy (Most People Get This Wrong)
The mistake: "My Brand - Beautiful Printables" as a board name
What works: "Budget Planner Printable" or "Digital Planner Free Download"
Your board names should be what a buyer would type into the Pinterest search bar. Not your brand aesthetics, not your personality — the buyer's search intent.
Board Structure for a Printables Shop
- "Budget Planner Printables Free"
- "Daily Planner Printable Download"
- "Wedding Printables DIY"
- "Canva Templates Small Business"
- "Etsy Digital Downloads"
- "Printable Checklists Organization"
- "Notion Templates Productivity"
Create 10-20 specific boards. Pin to the most relevant board for each product. Don't dump everything into one "My Etsy Shop" board.
Pinterest SEO (The Part That Actually Drives Traffic)
Pinterest SEO works like Google SEO. Match the words in your pin title and description to what buyers are actually searching for.
Pin Description Formula
- Lead with the keyword — "Budget planner printable for..." not "Check out this gorgeous..."
- Include a benefit — What does the buyer get? "Track monthly expenses in 5 minutes a day"
- Use natural variations — Include related phrases organically ("monthly budget tracker," "personal finance printable")
- Add a call to action — "Download instantly from Etsy → link in bio" or include the Etsy URL
- Keep it 100-300 characters — Pinterest shows about 75 characters in the feed; the rest matters for search indexing
The Automation Setup (Free)
Manually posting 3-6 pins daily is 15-30 minutes of work every day. With scheduling tools, it's 30 minutes once a week for the whole week. Here's the full automation setup we use — Buffer API + pre-made images + batch scheduling.
The batch workflow: Design 20-30 pins in Canva in one session. Export all. Write descriptions using AI (ChatGPT or Claude). Schedule 3-6 pins/day in Buffer. Don't touch it for a week. Repeat.
What Not to Do (Hard-Learned Lessons)
Don't: Pin to irrelevant boards to "get more exposure." Pinterest's algorithm knows when a pin's topic doesn't match its board. Mismatched pins get suppressed, not boosted.
Don't: Use the same image for every pin to the same listing. Create 3-5 different creative versions of each product pin — different angles, different text overlays, different color schemes. Test which performs.
Don't: Link pins to your shop homepage. Link to the specific Etsy listing. Every extra click loses buyers. Direct link = more conversions.
Don't: Expect results in 30 days. Pinterest is a 3-6 month game. The compounding starts slow and accelerates. The people who quit at month 2 are the ones who never see it work.
